Shelter from the Storm

£6.00

Funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund & complied by Chris Sutton, this A4 size book tells the story of Smethwick’s Home Front from 1938 to 1940, as seen by our local newspaper, The Smethwick Telephone. as well as those who were there. There are extensive press cuttings from the Telephone & articles of the day as well as a detailed look at the Anderson Shelter, its design & construction etc.

The book is rounded off by memories of the Home Front & a fascinating section given over to the (known) remaining shelters that are or were still in existence long after the War was over.

Due to the archival nature of The Telephone copies, the print quality can vary from piece to piece.

Most of the articles in these pages have not been seen since they were originally printed.
