Chairman’s Letter: June 2014

Hi Everyone,

I have some great news, the Heritage Lottery fund has awarded our Museum £ 9,900 to research Smethwick industries during the First World War. The project entitled “From the Factories to the Front –line” will include publishing a book and exhibition. Any interesting facts or memorabilia from your relatives on this subject would be most welcome and very helpful. Please get in touch. After many years of editing our magazine single handed, Bob Baldwin (right) has stepped down from the job. A huge thank you to Bob for all his hard work for keeping the magazine going without a break over the last 10 years. Bob thankfully is not leaving us, as he will continue with the twice monthly Genealogy sessions, for which we are very grateful. We now have two Editors, Chris Sutton and Charlie Millward, working together with some of our volunteers. Any articles and photographs for inclusion in the magazine should now be sent to the Lodge as this is the new editing hub. Please do keep sending your articles, as you, our members, give such pleasure to other readers reminiscing about old Smethwick. I hope you all enjoyed our Chance Exhibition, our first Road Show of 2014, at Holy Trinity Church. My grateful thanks, to the Reverend David Gould for allowing us to hold our exhibition in such a beautiful church. I was told by many of our visitors that they had been married at the church and the visit had brought back many happy memories. After researching Chance Brothers for the exhibition Trevor and I spent a few days in Cornwall where we had a “Chance Encounter” at St. Mawes; hence the photograph of me standing next to an old SHELL petrol pump from the 1940’s – the glass “Shell” being made by Chance’s. I just had to have a photograph! We have two more new venues this year for our roadshows. In June our exhibition is at the Oldbury Council House when the theme will be Smethwick Industries. In July we are at the Harry Mitchell Leisure Centre, better known to many of us as The Drill Hall. The theme will be M&B. I hope all you ex employees will come along and see our full collection and reminisce, with your former colleagues. Coffee Mornings are back! Since we have reopened we have had one or two requests asking for our coffee morning to be re-instated. As we now close on Wednesdays we will open as a coffee morning on the following days, Friday 4th July, Friday 1 st August and then Friday 5th September, so please come along for a chat and watch a film about Smethwick. We are always looking for new volunteers to give us a few hours of their time each week, so please come along and join us for a cup of coffee on any of these days, we would love to welcome you to join our working group. Best Wishes – Mary Lee
