Chairman’s Letter: March 2013

Hi Everyone,

Just to remind you all that we open our museum on Wednesday 6th March with our new style
“Coffee Morning “ when we will be open from 10.30 to 3pm and will show short films throughout
the day and incorporate a bring-and-buy table. There will also be an opportunity to visit the
Smethwick Pump House and have a guided tour. This will be open from 11 am to 3pm, so have tea or
coffee with us at the centre and then take a walk down the High Street or if you prefer, drive down
to the car park behind the new West Bromwich Albion Community Centre (the old Galton Canal
Museum ). Then take the short walk to the canal bridge and down the steps to the Pump House.
This new format for the first Wednesday in the month will continue throughout the year. However,
for the foreseeable future all other Wednesdays we will be closed unless we have special group visits
or school visits. The reason for this is that we are short of volunteers to man the desk at the
museum, so please if you are interested in helping us out for a few hours, let me know.
We shall be open as usual on Saturdays but on certain Saturdays throughout the year we will open
from 11am -3 pm serving tea and coffee and stage a different theme or event. The first Special
Saturday will be on 30th March when we will have an exhibition about the Carriage Works. So all exworkers
please come along and see a new film about the company. These new opening hours I hope
will give families and working folk an opportunity to visit our museum.
We have two new venues for our Roadshows this year. On Saturday 16th March our first Roadshow
will be held at the Smethwick Council House, when our theme will be “Our Smethwick”. Tea and
coffee will be served in our Exhibition room where further exhibitions can be seen. On Saturday
June 29th our Roadshow will be held at Holly Lodge School when the theme will be “Growing up in
Smethwick”.
Our web site has had an update and our books can now be bought on line. Face book and twitter
have also taken off with lots of hits ( if that the right expression!) so we are now in the 21st century.
Do not forget our Genealogy sessions which continue twice per month on Thursday. Our specialist
team give one-to-one tuition and have access to up-to-date software to “ Find Your past” .
Chris Sutton’s book about Bill Savage has been very successful with lots of outside interest. We
hope to publish a new book this year; more news on that as the year progresses.
Please see the back page of the magazine for more information about new opening dates and events
throughout this year.

 Best Wishes – Mary Lee
